The Northern Territory Government’s 2025–26 budget, handed down by Treasurer Bill Yan on Tuesday, May 13, includes new and ongoing funding that may affect your community group or not-for-profit.
Here’s a summary of key funding and grant programs:
- $88 million has been allocated for tourism, events and screen production, a decrease from $92 million last year. This includes $2.2 million for Indigenous tourism projects, down $400,000 from the previous budget.
- $35 million in additional funding has been committed to government primary schools, alongside $18 million for government secondary schools and $10 million for non-government schools.
- A total of $16 million has been allocated for domestic, family and sexual violence (DFSV) services this year, rising to $36 million in 2026–27. This includes:
- $6.6 million for the Circuit Breaker youth diversion program.
- $4.2 million for prison-based DFSV prevention programs.
- $18 million over five years for men's behaviour change programs in Darwin, Wadeye, Alice Springs and Katherine.
- $2 million over five years to establish remote women’s safe houses.
- $3.3 million over five years, plus $300,000 ongoing, for community-led DFSV prevention initiatives.
- $800,000 over five years, plus $100,000 ongoing, for community-based awareness programs.
- $1 million has been committed to the new Military History Tourism Grant Program to develop or expand military heritage tourism projects.
- Grants of up to $75,000 are available in round two of the Recreational Fishing Grant Scheme to support large-scale infrastructure projects aimed at growing recreational fishing in the NT.
- The Biz Secure Program is offering $15,000 grants for small to medium businesses to improve their security. Applications close 30 June 2025, or earlier if funding is exhausted.
- Electric Vehicle (EV) Charger Grants offer $2,500 for businesses and $1,000 for households and individuals to install EV chargers.
- A new Workwear and Gear Bonus is available to support apprentices and trainees. (Funding amounts have not been released.)
What this means for your organisation
The budget includes both targeted and broad-based programs that may offer direct funding or indirect support for community service delivery, youth work, education, and local infrastructure. While some areas such as Indigenous tourism have seen reductions, other areas, particularly education and DFSV services, have received boosts.
However, the Northern Territory Council of Social Service (NTCOSS) and specialist DFSV providers say the DFSV funding does not go far enough to meet community needs.
If your organisation works in regional safety, youth services, education support, tourism, or infrastructure, now is the time to review your eligibility and prepare for upcoming grant rounds. For organisations in the DFSV sector, it may be important to monitor additional announcements and advocate for further investment.
We'll continue to monitor program announcements and opening dates as they are released.
